Omega-3s support heart health during weight loss

Adding fish oil supplements and other sources of omega-3 fatty acids to a low-carbohydrate diet may be an effective way to support heart health for overweight individuals, according to a new report in the Journal of Nutrition.

Researchers from Cordoba University in Spain compared the effects of several kinds of diets. Weight loss plans included diets that were rich in either saturated fat, monounsaturated fat, complex carbohydrates or carbohydrates and omega-3s.

They found that individuals who were assigned to consume high levels of carbs and omega-3s showed the strongest support for heart health, as the other diets resulted in unhealthy levels of fat deposits in the blood.

“When you add omega-3 to a high carbohydrate, low-fat diet, you can prevent the long-term adverse effect that a high-carbohydrate diet induces on [blood fats],” Jose Lopez-Miranda, a professor of medicine at the University of Cordoba, Spain, told HealthDay News.

He added that overweight individuals who are trying to shed excess pounds may want to add omega-3s to their diet to support heart health.

Mediterranean diet may support healthy skin

“My theory was that if you prepared the body with sufficient and relevant antioxidants, damage could be reduced,” said Niva Shapira, who led the investigation.

Shapira added that she was inspired to conduct the study after noticing that people who live in the Mediterranean region have low instances of skin damage despite spending significant time in the sun. These individuals generally eat diets rich in antioxidants and omega-3s.

Omega-3s may support hearing in seniors

Mediterranean diet supports heart health
